RTL-SDR Blog V4 Software Defined Radio Receiver

This USB software-defined radio receiver is built around the RTL2832U ADC and the R828D tuner used by the official RTL-SDR Blog V4 design. It is intended for receive-only SDR work across HF, VHF and UHF with compatible host software.

Verified V4 Hardware

• R828D tuner with RTL2832U 8-bit ADC.
• Official tuning range: 500 kHz to 1.766 GHz.
• 2.56 MHz stable bandwidth; wider settings may produce dropped samples.
• 1 PPM TCXO, 50-ohm SMA input and USB-A host connection.
• Software-switchable 4.5 V bias tee, rated by the manufacturer up to 180 mA.

V4 Signal Path

The V4 uses a built-in HF upconverter and a triplexed input for HF, VHF and UHF. Switchable notch filtering is used around common AM, FM and DAB broadcast bands to reduce strong out-of-band interference. The aluminum enclosure and internal thermal pad help move heat away from the receiver board.

Compatibility and Use Notes

• Install a current RTL-SDR driver and software package that explicitly supports the V4 architecture.
• Direct-sampling mode used by some older dongles is not the correct HF mode for the V4.
• This is a receive-only device and has no transmit capability.
